As I write this, it is July 6th, 2026. Our nation celebrated its 250th birthday 48 hours ago. We celebrated our founding, our freedom, and all that makes our nation special. But one question went completely ignored: On this auspicious national birthday, what would Christ say to America?
That’s an uncomfortable but vital question. It’s more important than all the commemorative coins, speeches, parades, extravagant fireworks, and drone shows.
It’s a question every serious Christian should pause to consider. For we share a symbiotic relationship with this nation. Our churches do too. As goes our faithfulness, so goes the nation. The health of our churches impacts the health of our culture. Whatever Jesus might say to America, He is also saying to His people who call America their home.
Having said that, what would a letter to America from the King of kings and Lord of lords (and President of presidents) contain?
Such a letter is buried in the epilogue of a book titled The Eight Letter: Exploring Jesus’ Letters to the Seven Churches and Discovering What He is Saying to Yours by Mark Barnard and Kenneth Quick.
I share it below to bring a little sobriety to our celebration. I share it to move believers one step closer to praying seriously for revival. I share it so that, if it resonates with you, you and your church can prayerfully respond to Christ’s letter. For it is one thing to read what Christ might say to America. It is another to respond to it. The letter goes as follows:
Christ’s Letter to America
To the Angel of America, write, He who is the fountainhead of freedom and wellspring of liberty, the One who brings down democracies and dictators alike, says this:
I know your deeds, that you have been a light to the nations. You have restrained evil and covered Jacob with your wings. You inspired the helpless, drew the persecuted to your shores, and nourished distant lands. And you allowed My people the freedom to worship without fear.
You persevered against powers greater than yourself, but not by your own hand. I know you have become a target for every two-bit leader and self-exalting head of State and that you shudder under the weight of your own elected leaders. But have I not begun to give you the leaders you deserve? Your moorings have long been strained by your oppression of different races—all while trumpeting a National covenant that says they are your equals. You have not repented but grown arrogant instead. You stagger in economic uncertainty and flounder in moral vacancy. Yet I allow you to abide . . . for now.
Nevertheless, I hold these faults to be self-evident: You let loose the bonds of truth and shackle yourself to lies. You look only to the Right and to the Left, and only “up” when a national tragedy occurs. You trust in your ramparts, but your levees, unrepaired and inadequate, have burst before the storm! What was once a fruited plain now drowns in waves of pain.
Therefore, consider the motives behind your founding and repent of the violence and rebellion that plagues you from birth. Make straight paths for your feet instead of building more highways. Repair weakened families rather than bridges. Humble yourselves under the weight of your burdens and forego your dreams of prosperity and empire. If you do not repent, I will come to you quickly and remove the torch of freedom from the hand of Liberty, and oppressors will afflict you from morning to night – not pausing for dawn’s early light.
He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to America. To him who overcomes, I will grant him eternal freedom. Unperturbed by tyranny, he will enjoy everlasting honor among those who abide forever in My Presence.
Whether you agree with the exact contents of the letter above or not, seeking God’s face, repenting of our national and personal sins, and praying for a new move of the Spirit across this land might be the best way to celebrate our nation’s 250th year.

A wonderful and thoughtful post, Mark! It is, at once, an encouraging and sobering call to acknowledge God’s sovereign knowledge of, interest in and authority over the “American experiment.”
